The Necessity for REST

overcoming burnout personal development professional development self care work-life balance

How can you start to take on the challenge of changing your life from busy to best?  One vital personal development strategy that is often overlooked is rest.

Do you ever feel guilty about resting?

Are you so busy that the thought of rest makes you anxious?

Does work-life balance seem like a fairytale and out of reach?

If the answer is yes to any or all of these questions, then my friend you are on the path to burnout, and for your good, and the good of your loved ones, you MUST change your mindset.  You can overcome burnout, but it takes intentionality.

Restorative or purposeful rest refers to a state of rest that involves adequate sleep and encompasses various practices that rejuvenate the mind, body, and soul. It goes beyond merely lying down and closing your eyes; it involves achieving a deep, restorative state that allows for physical recovery, mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual well-being. There are seven components of restorative rest:

👉🏻 Sleep
👉🏾 Physical rest
👉🏼 Mental rest
👉🏿 Emotional rest
👉 Sensory rest
👉🏾 Social rest
👉🏼 Creative rest

It’s not necessary to engage in all seven components at the same time, however, they should become sprinkled in your routine to create a balance and schedule that benefits your lifestyle.

The benefits of restorative rest are so impactful that you will ask yourself why you have not done this before. These benefits include physical recovery, mental clarity, emotional balance, and spiritual well-being.

You are probably asking: how can I achieve restorative rest when I barely have time to sit down for 5 minutes throughout my day? Well, friend, The Wisdom Well suggests the following strategies:

Establish a Routine: Create a consistent daily schedule that includes time for sleep, relaxation, and mindful activities.

Optimize Sleep Environment: Ensure your sleeping space is comfortable, quiet, and disruption-free.

Practice Relaxation Techniques: Incorporate activities such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation into your routine.

Stay Physically Active: Engage in regular, moderate exercise to promote overall health and better sleep quality.

Manage Stress: Use stress-reducing techniques like mindfulness, therapy, or hobbies that bring joy and relaxation.

Balance Work and Play: Ensure you balance your work, social activities, and leisure time.

Remember, rest is not a luxury—it's necessary for personal development and a vital tool to overcome burnout. As you incorporate these strategies into your daily routine, you'll find yourself more energized, focused, and emotionally balanced. Your productivity will soar, and you'll be better equipped to handle the demands of your busy life.

Don't wait until you are forced to rest because of burnout. Take proactive steps to prioritize restorative rest today. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you.

Embrace rest as a vital component of your well-being, and watch as it transforms not only your personal life but also your professional endeavors. Rest well, live well, and thrive, changing your life from busy to BEST!
