The Myth of Balance

leadership personal priorities work-life balance

We hear it over and over…

It is HARD to achieve a balance between your professional and personal lives.

How many times have you tried to make changes with little progress?

Countless.

It’s because often, it’s not our efforts that are wrong, it’s our mindset.

The idea of work-life balance is often portrayed as the ideal state where one can equally divide time and energy between professional and personal responsibilities.

That unfortunately is more of a myth and a completely unrealistic goal, particularly in the modern world, where work and personal life increasingly overlap due to technology and cultural expectations.

Instead of following cookie-cutter solutions, we should prioritize our life based on what is MOST important to us, right now – creating Harmony.  This involves recognizing that life changes constantly, and your focus and time allocation need to adapt accordingly.

Here are some strategies to help you customize your work/life balance based on your life season:

👉 Identify Your Current Season - Take time to reflect on the season of life you're currently in by determining your most important current responsibilities, your career stage, personal goals, and limitations (i.e., health, career, family,  financial).

👉🏼 Set Priorities Based on Your Values and Goals - Your priorities shift with the season of life, so focus on what’s most important now. For example, early in your career, you may have focused on building your skills, networking, and advancing professionally, as compared to a family-building season with young children, your focus may switch to family taking precedence, so you’ll likely need flexibility in your work schedule and time for self-care.

👉🏼 Establish Flexible Time Blocks - Rather than rigid schedules, create time blocks that allow flexibility depending on the day's needs. For example, the morning may focus on high-priority work tasks when you're most alert; in the afternoon, you may dedicate time to relationships, such as family, friends, or networking; and your evening may consist of self-care, hobbies, or winding down.

👉🏿 Make Time for Reflection and Growth - In any season, prioritize personal reflection or downtime, whether through journaling, meditation or simply quiet time. Regular reflection helps you remain grounded, assess what’s working, and adjust your focus if needed.

Prioritizing your time based on the season of life you’re in is about aligning your schedule with what truly matters in the present while allowing space for evolution as your life changes.  This professional and personal development skill allows you to move from a life of coping, to a life of flourishing.

We believe this concept is so important that we have created a resource to help you create the HARMONY you need.  It’s called “Breakthrough Balance with Coach Joaniebop, who has helped dozens of people achieve their personal goals, without sacrificing their sanity in the process.  This video is part of our Redefining the Good Life course.  The lesson has a development worksheet that will help you recognize what to focus your efforts on, creating the HARMONY you crave.  You can find both FREE resources HERE.

If you are one of the lucky ones, who has your work and life complete in order, forward this email and let a friend or a colleague in on the secret so they can live in HARMONY too!

All the best, Tonya
